By the time I get to work, they have already been hard at work and I see all the rental equipment laid out and inspected. They do some great work together. They also work on cleaning up the different parks around Kadena and the Marina, to include Marek Park, Kenney Park, and more. They work in the early morning hours, before the Okinawan heat gets too extreme. They set up the equipment, wash it down, and make any repairs necessary.
The Park Crew enjoys working early in the morning, because their day ends early, leaving time to spend with their families and enjoying their hobbies. They love what they do because they love working outside as a team. They are a crew of 8 members, who have worked at ODR from 22 and 24 years, to 4 months. Having crew members who have worked at the facility for so long means they have the expertise to train new members to be in tip-top shape. The newest member, who has only been there for.
Paul Calain, manager at ODR, says he never ceases to be amazed by their hard work. This is true! The Park Crew enjoys collaborating with other FSS facilities and meeting new team members from around the squadron. They work in conjunction with the Schilling Community Center to work out logistics and plans in case of changing weather conditions, which we know is frequent on Okinawa.
If the weather turns sour on the day of the event, the Park Crew has to spring into action and make sure the canopies and tables are secured or taken down to avoid safety issues for the hundreds of customers at the events. Written by Elizabeth Bryan Festival season is my favorite time of year in Japan. The atmosphere reminds me of some of my fondest childhood memories of enjoying the county fair with my family.
The food and entertainment may be a bit different, but the environment of community and fun is exactly the same! I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to experience multiple festivals during their time here. Each one has something unique to enjoy! The Naha Tug of War is probably the most well-known of the festivals on Okinawa.
It even holds a world record for the largest tug of war rope! Believe me, the scale of it really is impressive. The competitive spirit, colorful cultural costumes, and community of the event captivated me. Before I knew it, I was pulling with all my might so that my side the east would win. After the tug of war is done, the festival kicks off with parades of eisa and karate performers. We purchased many different souvenirs and ate delicious food. The vibrant costumes are a truly stunning backdrop to an entrancing afternoon.
Many believe that Shisa protect against evil spirits and bring good fortune. The Shisas are full of personality when they perform and often interact with the audience. The Tedako Festival is probably the festival I love the best, and one that I make a point to always attend. You can walk around and grab food from various vendors, watch performances by taiko drummers, and enjoy live music.
Photographs from my friends made me put it on my list for this year, and I am excited to attend. The performance of classical Ryukyuan music by local musicians is something I am eager to watch. I am a huge fan of the Sanshin.

JCI, or Japanese Compulsory Insurance, is a government regulated and mandated safety inspection that must be done every two years for cars and motorcycles in Japan. Why is it important to start your JCI renewal process 30 days in advance? If repairs are needed, you have time to complete them. What do JCI inspectors look for? Where do I find when my JCI is due? Why is JCI so expensive? Yellow plates have different prices. Car age, condition, and maintenance are factors in how many repairs are needed.
What happens if my JCI expires because I missed it? You cannot drive the car without suffering a series of penalties. Tow the car to a garage to do the inspection. Driving with an out-of-date JCI can result in driving privileges being suspended. Nagannu Island belongs to the Kerama National Park and is, of course, absolutely gorgeous.
