The interference waveform which is representative of the brain wave activity is re-transmitted by the brain to a receiver where it is demodulated and amplified. The demodulated waveform is then displayed for visual viewing and routed to a computer for further processing and analysis. The demodulated waveform also can be used to produce a compensating signal which is transmitted back to the brain to effect a desired change in electrical activity therein.

Transcript Vietnam made enormous progress in developing its education system in recent years, but still faced challenges in rural and remote areas, particularly in meeting the needs of disadvantaged children-poor kids, street kids, kids with disabilities, and kids from ethnic minorities.

Some children had to walk two to three kilometres along steep mountain paths just to get to school. I graduated this year. I apply some teaching methods that I learned to make it easier for my students to learn. By the end of Primary school enrolment increased from 80 percent to 99 percent Primary school completion rates increased from 72 percent to 94 percent Drop-out rates fell from 12 percent to 2. Rudolf Steiner founded the first school in Stuttgart Germany to educate the children of the factory workers from the Waldorf Astoria Zigaretten Fabrik — hence the name.

All kids, independent of social status or talent received the same instruction, which made the school a pioneer of social justice in education. The goal of a Waldorf education is to develop free, but morally responsible individuals equipped with a high degree of social competence and creative capabilities.

Factual knowledge, homework and tests scores receive less attention. Storytelling and experimentation are the main method of instruction, textbooks are being avoided. Over the twelve-year curriculum, students learn math, literature, history and science as well as a wide variety of arts and hands-on skills. Elementary students paint, knit, weave and sculpt with wax.

Older ones make patterns, books, pottery and sculpt in stone. Everybody learns to do music. First all play the flute, then some play string instruments and others join the choir. Students play non-competitive games and learn to dance eurhythmy. They do organic farming and learn two foreign languages, which in the first years are taught through songs, storytelling and conversations. In grade 8 and 12 the entire class develops a classical drama which they perform in front of their parents and friends.

Waldorf uses a unique project based approach to almost all main academic subjects. Instead of repetitive schedules, a specific subject, such as history, math, science or even gardening dominates the first two hours in the morning for a period of weeks. After that, a new subject gets the main focus. Steiner also invented an experiential approach to science whereby students observe and later describe scientific concepts in their own words and drawings rather than learning about them in a textbook first.

Waldorf schools therefore consider computers useful to children only in their teens, after they have mastered fundamental, time-honored ways of discovering information and learning. In the spirit of personal development and empathy, competition and grades are being avoided. Tests scores and grades are only slowly introduced to older students as they prepare for college and entrance exams. Today there are over a thousand Waldorf schools in 60 countries, making it one of the largest independent school movements.

Waldorf has become a recognised educational theory in Europe and its schools have received state funding. Take action: globalcitizen. Although the acronym STEM Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics has gained substantial traction around the globe in the last decade, its educational implication is much debated.

Interpretations of STEM education differ in their emphases, for instance, on interdisciplinarity or integration, on developing skills such as critical thinking or creativity, or on introducing contemporary content e. Yet, implementation of STEM education poses serious challenges for schools and teachers in terms of curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and organisation.

This presentation will explore the longitudinal research needed to determine the impact of STEM education on students, teachers and schools. On September 14, , the LIGO detectors observed that three solar masses of energy had radiated away from merging black holes, in the form of gravitational waves. Education in the 90s was very different from what it is today. Our latest sketch looks at the differences between Education then and Education now. Scholar A. Purdue University Press. Transcript — We need to become better at tracking student learning growths not at just seeing where students are at any point in time but also seeing how they actually progress in their learning pathways.

And actually a lot is happening in that field. In fact, the PISA assessment as we have it currently focusing on 15 year olds is looking into expanding to lower grades so that we can actually get at least at the synthetic level some sense of the progress that is being made in education raising quality, improving equity and also value for money.

The PISA data show that parents have a very significant influence on the success of their children. We see that where parents have a greater expectations on education, where parents are more closely involved in the education of their children results are significantly better.

Their persistence when things get tough in school. So parental involvement is very important. What did go wrong? So a very important ingredient for success is to make parents part of the equation.

But, in fact, the PISA data do not lend much evidence to this. In fact, some of the most rapidly improving systems are some of the best performing systems. They want to move from good to great. What are the kind of knowledge and skills that we need to improve on? You can look at Singapore. Singapore has always done well on math and science tests. But Singaporean educators have not been satisfied with this. Students ways of working, collaboration, teamwork and so on.

So the education system is actually looking towards moving forward. Complacency is a risk but we do actually see very encouraging signals that improvement is taking place at every part of the system. So the measurement framework is really, really critically important. But we also do see incentives not only for our low performers to catch up but also for the strong performers to move forward further. It was a bit long? A humanistic perspective is very important to evaluating educational results.

In fact, we need to get away from looking at education with a single perspective. Evaluation can only take part place in a framework of multiple kinds of perspectives.

Looking at test data from students is one perspective. Looking at teachers views on student performance. You can evaluate teachers on the basis of student learning outcomes. This is one perspective. But you also need to bring in other perspectives that value the broader responsibilities that teachers have. So looking at outcomes from multiple perspectives including these kind of quality — qualitative outlook is very, very important.

Most people agree that impact investing is about supporting startups that create environmental, social and economic impact in parallel. Still, there are different personal and and corporate preferences when it comes to putting an impact investing strategy into practice. Some entrepreneurs and investors focus on social impact while others want to create impact by supporting founders in the early stage when less fundraising alternatives are available as the risk is still too high.

Agreement was reached that scale plays an important role as we want to create big impact with big startups.

At any rate, impact investors and financially driven VCs may actually complement one another very well as they bring different values and skill sets to the table. The founders just have to make sure that values are aligned and the same growth strategy is supported by all investors. April 23, at Teachers College Columbia University. In his Honors Thesis, Baylor Graduate Nathan Elequin discusses the unlikely alliance between game design and educational psychology, and the strategies that educators can implement in their learning programs to increase the engagement of their students.

Meanwhile, research from the unorthodox and previously-untapped field of game design offers to provide a unique solution to these educational concerns. In short, the newly-emerging field of gamification asks a simple question — how can we make the learning experience more meaningful and fun for the average student?

In this expansion on the works of TEDx spokesperson Yu-Kai Chou and New York Times bestseller Jane McGonigal, I argue that game designers possess an invaluable expertise in holding the attention of and creating meaningful experiences for emerging adults. I then dissect the higher educational discipline from the perspective of a game engineer, to discuss and diagnose the critical failings of the institution in exciting and engaging its students.

By the end of this thesis, parents, student, educators, and administrators alike will have acquired actionable tools to increasing the enjoyment and engagement of their educational experiences.

Using a laser interferometer, which splits a single beam into two that eventually rejoin, LIGO was able to detect a small displacement from the normal wave.

This displacement indicated the presence of a gravitational-wave. Zsuzsa Marka is an experimental physicist at Columbia University.

Thornton joined us at the ISTE Conference EdTekTalks to share his findings on using exercise to change school cultures and optimize student learning. Just a couple minutes of exercise can help students focus better and retain more information. The other side of the coin, however, is proper sleep. Memory is consolidated during sleep, and as students are getting less sleep than they did in the past—partly due to constant access to the Internet, online games, etc.

Technology, says Thornton, interferes with both exercise and sleep, but also offers ideas and solutions to get more exercise and sleep. For the first time, we did a panel about the intersection of impact investing and venture capital at ECO15 London as we believe it is a very important topic and a great opportunity for startups to tap into more sources of capital.
