In addition to being sick for pretty much all of it, my corgi puppy, named Twinkie, had to undergo heart surgery. It all started back in July when we brought Twinkie to the vet for a little scrape on her foot.

Although we were told the scrape was nothing, we were also told she had a heart murmur which was news to us. We made an appointment with a canine cardiologist. So needless to say, we went forward with the surgery, which happened Aug. Despite my fears, immediately donations starting pouring in from co-workers, family members, friends and complete strangers.

A year-old girl even went as far as dedicating her birthday to Twinkie. Instead of asking for presents, she asked for donations for Twinkie, whom she had only met once. Thanks to all of the support from friends and strangers alike, my husband and I were able to focus on Twinkie and what is most important— getting her back to her normal, spunky self and giving her the long, healthy life she deserves. Twinkie is now free to run laps around the house what we call the Corgi , run up and down the stairs over and over again and play with her sister Frosty and all of her corgi friends.

For many, getting back into a routine and setting goals for the coming months feels like a healthy next step after a restorative summer of sun, fun and vacation. We live in a culture that often valMovers and ues busyness over and excess Shakers rest, over restraint. Research shows that ignoring our need for rest and relaxation not only harms ourselves, but the people around us as well.

Our children not only watch how we deal with stress, they learn from our example. According to the American Psychological Association, teens are becoming as stressed out as the adults in their lives.

And during the school year, they sometimes report even higher levels of stress than their parents. The pressure to do it all: get good grades, take advanced classes, participate in a sport or extra-curricular activity and get a job can overwhelm a youth who is already doing the hard work of navigating adolescence.

Stress is the net effect of mustering the resources necessary to respond to stressors in our lives. The skills we learn and fortitude we gain when we respond to stressors is necessary for personal, academic and professional growth.

It becomes a problem when we lack the resources to effectively manage stress or when we are under too much stress for too long. She adds that parents need to regularly check in with themselves, and with their children, to determine what is a manageable level of stress and what is too much.

Cain says to be aware that younger children might not have the words to fully express their feelings — but their bodies often tell the tale for them. Kids who are prone to stomach aches before school, lose their appetite frequently or have trouble sleeping may be exhibiting signs of too much stress in their life. Adults may have similar symptoms and can experience a rapid heartbeat, chest pain, fatigue, headaches or muscle tension in.

Some stress from things like job loss or a long illness, cannot be avoided. Physical exercise, meditation and massage can also help. Cain adds that we have more control over stressors than we realize. Canceling a volunteer commitment or dropping a class will not cause an organization to fail, or keep a student from succeeding in life.

Recognizing and addressing stress is not a failure, but a recognition that our minds and bodies need consistent care if we are to perform at our best. In the long term, rest and moderation are much more productive than burnout. Life is a marathon, not a sprint; we need to be at our best for the long haul. So now that summer is over and we may not have as many easy opportunities for rest and relaxation, take a few minutes to consider how you can build in some intentional downtime for yourself or loved ones.

Material may not be reproduced in whole Bloom Avenue or part in any form whatsoever. Dear District residents, please vote yes for the upcoming school levy. We moved into the district three years ago and have been incredibly happy with the schools in this district. Our experiences with teachers and staff have been so positive; we see them not only teaching well, but caring for students, communicating with parents, and going the extra mile to see students succeed and enjoy learning.

Thank you. Erica Whitson Mahtomedi. Think about this strategy: your high school student can take one class each year as a junior and senior, like EMT, cosmetology and much more. They could then go on to Century College to complete their AA degree with little debt. Employers are desperate for qualified applicants today, and your son or daughter could make one decision that could affect their entire financial future by getting career skills and training before they leave high school.

Employers might be willing to reimburse college tuition to retain an excellent worker. Many of our students who were not succeeding at their home schools found success in the hands-on approach offered at the CTC. Financial literacy begins with the ability to make and save money, and career training is an excellent choice for high school students. Candidate will advocate for small business, education Ami Wazlawik is the strongest candidate seeking election to serve as state representative for the people of North Oaks and White Bear Lake.

Ami is a lifelong resident of the White Bear area. She is a graduate of White Bear High School, earned degrees from the University of Minnesota in psychology and public policy, and has significant work experience in the White Bear School District. She supports expanding access to early childhood education, strong state financial support for schools, improving options for learning skilled trades, and affordable college education.

She supports common-sense legislation for gun safety, such as universal background checks. Ami believes we should take action to protect all our natural resources, including water, and invest more in creating renewable energy development and usage.

She knows that ensuring sustainable funding for public infrastructure, including roads, bridges and transit, is very important for the Minnesota economy. She supports high-quality affordable health care for all. She also has reached out to families to gain a deeper insight into their economic needs. She will be a strong advocate for small businesses and for families in our community. Nile Harper North Oaks. I voted for the senator when he ran for president and I acknowledge that there were some high points during his military and political careers.

However, it should be noted that during the campaign for his last election, repeal and replacement of the Affordable Care Act was a hot topic and he pledged to his constituents that he would vote to repeal and replace the act. When the close vote was finally taken in the Senate to repeal and replace the act, John McCain ceremoniously strode to the front and dramatically gave a big thumbs down, thus casting the actual vote that blocked the legislation he had pledged to support. It was obvious to me and many others that his action was not in support of his constituents at home or in the Senate, but rather a spite to the president in classic and petty tit-for-tat political action.

This action erased any respect I had for him. Alan Fletcher Mahtomedi. Ami is running to represent District 38B in St. Ami grew up in White Bear Lake just like me and she cares about things that matter to all of us. Ami and I both graduated from White Bear Lake High School, and Ami currently works in the school district supporting children and helping them achieve success.

I am a college student at Winona State University, but I registered absentee so I could participate in local democracy in the town that I love. Ami is rooted in our community and knows what we need from a representative down in St. I am so excited to vote absentee for Ami this November — she cares about White Bear Lake just like me and she will represent us well in St.

In the United States of America, we stand for our flag and our national anthem. We do so to honor our country and those men and women who have given their lives to preserve our freedom.

America is the least racist country in the world. It is not perfect and like the humans who make up America, it never will be. We can wish for utopia, but it will not happen in this world. Kaepernick has the right to mock and disrespect the United States, a country that has afforded him numerous opportunities and riches far beyond what the majority of its citizens can only imagine.

Regarding our long tradition of honoring our flag, Edmund Burke stated it so clearly when he said, a culture and a society are not things run for the convenience of the people who happen to be here right now, but a deep pact between the dead, the living and those yet to be born. Bacon, you are defending an ungrateful and disrespectful person. I urge you to think a second time. Scott Nintzel White Bear Township.

As I write this letter, I am reminded of the catastrophic event that occurred in New York City 17 years ago this month. I cannot imagine the horror, confusion, thoughts and bravery of the people who had to try to solve and deal with the repercussions and events, all happening at roughly the same time. Only because of strong leadership, experience and collaboration did we come out of this horrific turn of events.

We came out more united, braver, kinder, more compassionate and stronger! Patti Anderson has all of these qualities. In addition, Patti has built up a company that employs over 80 people. My vote will be for someone for whom I have confidence. My vote will be for someone who has experience. My vote will be for someone who, if another tragedy comes out of nowhere, will be better prepared to cope with it. My vote is important to me. That is why my vote is for Patti Anderson. I hope yours will be too.

Carlson White Bear Township. Candidate came prepared to forum I confidently recommend Ami Wazlawik for the position of state representative for House District 38B. Issues covered included school safety, health care, omnibus bills, gun control, gerrymandering and others. It was clear that Ami had spent a lot of time talking to area residents to learn about concerns and issues important to them, and then researched the issues and developed plans to address the concerns.

Her opponent relied heavily on standard Republican platitudes reduce regulation, reduce government-funded programs, anti-gun control and had not thought out specific plans to accomplish goals. Ami had ideas for addressing affordable health care issues, problems stemming from gerrymandering and the measurable benefits of early childhood education, among others.

I encourage you to vote for Ami Wazlawik for state representative in November. Sheryl Bolstad White Bear Lake. Nike could have chosen better After reading several responses to Dr.

Why give any kudos to a man who makes millions playing a sport, and while working decides to kneel as a silent protest? How can anyone think this is OK?

To remind you what the flag represents: Why we stand for the flag? It is a symbol of all of the hopeful things America stands for. They found his body six months later in the rubble; his heroism leading people down the stairs to safety, wearing his red bandanna because of the smoke his father gave him, saved all of them. There are so many people who are extraordinary, but Kaepernick, who was raised in a Caucasian family with love and opportunities and who plays a game making millions, who decides he is going to protest the flag of the country that gave him this opportunity, is disgusting.

The evidence had not been properly noted in the case file given to the Ramsey County Attorney for review. Jahnke began to record audio on his cell phone shortly after he encountered officers and it captured the shooting incident, according to the BCA. This does not meet our standards for evidence examination and the BCA is reviewing what occurred to determine how to prevent this from happening again.

The BCA agent involved is no longer assigned to the unit that investigates officer involved shootings or homicides. Prosecutors are carefully reviewing the audio and have requested that the BCA prepare a written transcript of that audio. Deputies were not wearing body cameras. Two deputies were on routine patrol near when they located the suspicious RV and a car near Fanum Road at about p.

Two other deputies also arrived at the scene before a struggle with Jahnke ensued. Before Jahnke was shot, two deputies had used tasers during the struggle with Jahnke, according to the BCA.

When Jahnke disarmed one of the deputies, Deputy Andre Rongitsch fired. Jahnke was treated and transported to a hospital but died from his injuries. Lan was arrested after a yearlong investigation by a detective with the East Metro Human Trafficking Task Force, according to court documents. Detective Kroshus investigated an advertisement on backpage. Lan licensed Woodbury Wellness with the city in May She was not a licensed massage therapist at the time but was granted approval to operate without providing services herself.

White Orchid Spa was licensed in White Bear Lake in , when the city first enacted its massage ordinance. Kroshus saw more suspicious advertisements in January on. He discovered the account posted advertisements across the U. Detective Kroshus Shixun Lan also noted the account posted commercial sex ads.

During the investigation, officers also observed reviews of Woodbury Wellness on a website that reviews illicit massage parlors. Reviews indicated prostitution activity was likely taking place. Detectives observed a steady flow of male customers. It appeared one or two females were living at the location. Detectives also saw Lan transporting female employees from Woodbury Wellness and Orchid Spa to her residence in White Bear Lake and back to the massage parlors in the morning.

The GPS. Several customers were interviewed during traffic stops after they exited Woodbury Wellness this summer. He said five or six Chinese women work there. Another male stated that he was not provided sexual services that day, but he has received and been offered sexual acts by two employees at Woodbury Wellness. As she put the trash bag into the dumpster, some of the contents fell out — including several condom wrappers.

On Sept. Detectives observed body fluids in the massage rooms with an ultraviolet light. Employees on site were interviewed. An employee at Woodbury Wellness denied providing sexual acts but stated that she was asked to perform them by her customers. Two employees at White Orchid Spa denied providing.

One employee was a former employee of Therapy Massage located in Mahtomedi. The owner of Therapy Massage has since been sentenced in Washington County for felony promotion of prostitution. She was arrested and declined to speak with investigators. Numerous cell phones and documents were recovered from each search location and are expected to undergo forensic examination.

It was later learned that the motorcycle involved had been stolen and the suspect has a stint in jail to look forward to when he recovers. No suspects. The juvenile male was transported to a hospital for treatment.

The vehicle involved sustained substantial damage, according to the report. Deputies advised the complainant to return the money to the credit card company until the investigation involving the ticket seller, a Green Bay man, is complete. The motorist showed signs of intoxication and admitted to moderate drinking but refused the field sobriety test.

The complainant thinks the dog sitter may have accidentally left the garage door open. Deputies advised the reporter to dispose of the scale. Surveillance cameras showed two males entering the room during that time without backpacks and leaving the room with a backpack. He was invited to leave his car at the side of the road and fi nd other transportation. Because her eyes were bloodshot and watery, she was given a field sobriety test which demonstrated she had absolutely no level of intoxication.

The complainants suspected their son, who then admitted the activity. Because the parents are pressing charges, their son, a Willernie youth, faces charges for fi nancial transaction credit card fraud. It was found in St. One suspect was arrested on a warrant. MAHTOMEDI — If all the legal, municipal and environmental hoops are successfully cleared, and an ice arena is built in Grant a few years from now, future youth hockey mites may not need to be driven to Stillwater or Woodbury at 4 a. The Mahtomedi City Council at its Sept. The land upon which the rink will be built has been leased for the next 20 years from the school district and is located within the city of Grant.

The facility will use Grant sewer and water and will be located across the road from the high school. Rogosheske and Sampair have lived a combined 60 years in Mahtomedi.

The two lifelong residents both grew up skating on outdoor rinks. They realized that a sheet of skating ice is hard to come by, and that Mahtomedi had no rink, Rogosheske said. Skaters from Mahtomedi must play second fiddle to other cities to use their rinks. Mahtomedi hockey groups have an agreement to use the Stillwater rink until , he said. The nonprofit c 3 organization expects to finance all construction and expenses through tax deductible pledges and in-kind donations, according to Rogosheske.

If RINC 2 needs financing, funds would not come from a public body. The goal is to pay for the project with donations from individuals, businesses and organizations areawide.

No school, city or county. Rogosheske has been working on the project for almost four years. The project is extremely close to that goal, he added. After all the approvals have been secured and funding raised, the arena will undergo a seven-month construction period. The arena will be patterned after the St. Croix rink in Stillwater with a large lobby and several locker rooms. Of course, the luxury of the rink will depend on the funding received. Should the Taj Mahal version be built, the rink would take up 57, square feet and provide seating for 1, spectators.

Mahtomedi will have first choice, then others. Rogosheske said he. Four of the seven members of the Grant Planning Commission are in favor of the rink, he noted, as are three of the five Grant council members. In , RINC 2 also finalized a ground lease with the school district, following five presentations to the school board and four to the facilities commission.

The to-do list includes completing the environmental study process, having its CUP application activated from the day waiting period, updating its application, appearing before the Grant Planning Commission, appearing before both city councils, attaining a building permit and raising money for construction. Council members congratulated Rogosheske on the large amount of work he did.

City Administrator Scott Neilson said that Mahtomedi would have to give a couple of utilities approvals, even though the arena would be in Grant. The city would also need to amend its comprehensive plan due to the utilities issue.

An air exchange system was installed to improve air quality. The city is paying the remainder. It is also home to the White Bear figure skating school. The association president noted the facility took a lot of effort from a lot of people to make it happen. Debra Neutkens. One morning, we spotted an Eagle hovering and swooping over a small gray bird near the peninsula.

Len picked up speed and the Eagle beat a hasty retreat back to the peninsula. Crisis averted. A few days later, we stumbled upon a trio of Old Warrior Loons, with their battle scars and fading plumage. It was clear to us that these tough old Loons still had game as they put on a show featuring several courtship behaviors that included circling each other, stare downs, and synchronized dives with lots of splashing and hoots. After 20 minutes, one of the three dropped out and the remaining pair swam off together exchanging hoots and tipped bills.

We think they know there are more Eagles this year, because they are spending their mornings deep in the bulrushes. When out and about, they are clearly on edge and agitated. Their presence should give the remaining Loons on WBL some much needed relief. Paul and White Bear Lake. One of the stations is in Gem Lake. Gitzlaff reminded city leaders that there are an estimated , jobs within a minute walk along the corridor and 14 medical facilities.

The Gem Lake station will have positive benefits, according to Gitzlaff, due to its proximity to the Vadnais Heights Sports Center and proposed development.

The most obvious is crossing Hwy. Mayor Bob Uzpen pointed out that 60, cars a day use the highway. Station platforms are tentatively planned near the new Hy-Vee along Hwy. The platforms would be 80 by 20 feet on MnDOT right of way. Buses would drive on a dedicated lane. Gitzlaff said the county is aware of the challenge and confident access to the stations will be improved.

Concerns with parking near the platforms would be alleviated with a small park and ride at the Vadnais Sports Center. A stall ramp is one of the options. Councilwoman Gretchen Artig-Swomley inquired about the cost.

Gitzlaff said new numbers are coming out this fall. As for funding, it is a mix of federal and local. The county, through its rail authority levy and transportation sales tax, has funding set aside for the nonfederal part. That accounts for 50 percent of the cost. The rest is through the Federal Transit Administration.

There are four houses nearby and the rest have at least a minute walk. And how will people cross 61? That is scary. It seems like a lot of money for a bus line. As for ridership, County Road E is expected to have more residential. The project is expected to take up to 10 years to complete. Currently, the task force is five months into the two-year environmental analysis phase.

I was desperately frustrated and angry. He was able to raise an eyebrow. His daughter noticed. It was a turning point. It was proof of life. I just hated myself because I was so frustrated.

They are incentive to keep going. Due to the severity of his paralysis, his convalescence is taking a tad longer. The former mayor added some last words of gratitude. And I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. I want them to know it worked. We greatly appreciate your support. A tax levy determines the amount of property tax levied against homes in the township.

The effect the levy has on a home depends on its value. For a home in White Bear Township whose value increased by 4. Once finalized by the board, a levy can be lower than the preliminary amount but cannot exceed it. The levy would put the tax rate at a little more than 24 percent, which would be the third-lowest rate in the county, Finance Officer Tom Kelly said at the meeting. The levy was lowered due to changes in the project budget, including a decrease in the police budget, lowered consulting fees, a reduced election contract and more.

Net tax capacity is the taxable market value of a property multiplied by its tax rate — in this case, the total within the township. There will be a meeting on the budget on Dec. In other action at the Sept. The maker space would be a club where members could use the building for woodworking or other crafts. The final payment brought the total. The project came in under budget and the cost was assessed to benefitting properties.

The funding will come from the stormwater utility fund. The plan is expected to be done by December Funding will come from the improvement fund, an account set up specifically for improvements to the southeast side of town. I still live here and see many of these graduates at various community events and gatherings who have returned to this area to make their homes and bring up their families. The necessity of a sufficient educational program and facility is self-evident, as per our state constitution.

We support and will vote for this levy request for additional educational funding. I do not support the idea of delaying funding for educating our children. If not now, when? Additional school levy meetings Mahtomedi Public Schools will hold community meetings about the upcoming levy this fall.

The spa is located at Whitaker St.

The investigation of White Orchid is ongoing and additional charges are being considered, she added. The bike lock had been broken. An investigation continues. They picked up a dead goose in the median but were unable to locate a dead cat. A deputy mediated a dispute between the ladies.

An investigation is underway. The suspect was later arrested by Washington County deputies and jailed on a charge of felony domestic assault. The youth.

A tablet, tool case and cordless drill had been taken from the vehicle.

The collection is expected to be done at the end of the year. Funding will come from the improvement fund.
